Getting the right Salmon and Steelhead Rod
I recently had the opportunity to make a new friend to someone looking to get into fishing. When I asked what he intended to fish with, I spoke of some of the recommendations had been given. As a result of the "advice" he received, completed with Tweener. "That is, a bar that is in the middle, or you can use to fish for more than one species.
When choosing a rod, you want to choose one that best suits what you are fishing for. As I mentioned in one of my previous articles, when I started fishing for these larger fish (Salmon / Rainbow), I do not know anyone who was really into it. So I asked the guy at the store, and showed me a Tweener "rod. Let me tell you that immediately … does not work that way. You can fish, yes, but to really get to fishing, you want to use what works best.
Salmon Rods
Depending on where you intend to fish, these guys can come to class 50 + pounds. Will you be able to work one of these individuals, using the rod pounds 10-20 ("Tweener" rod) you? Probably not. When fishing for Silvers (silver) that rod is perfect, because these fish typically run in the class 10 to 20 pounds. Sometimes a little bigger but you get the idea.
By putting in a Chinook, you need something with backbone and power. Something heavy enough to handle ride these fish are going to give.
Typically, the average salmon rod is rated 12 to 25 pounds. and 8'6 "long. This bar will force you need as well as the duration for the issue of skill. This bar will not be so sensitive, but that's OK since Salmon normally will not "bite" in his presentation. They smell and maybe think about it, but once he decided … just taken. No pecking like a rainbow I would.
Once to set the hook … Beware! When the hook is set these guys will come un-glued. Again, at the time you need some power in the bar to control or fight them. Remember, these fish are running 20 pounds or more. You are in a fight.
If you will be fishing from a boat, you may want to go one Slightly smaller in length. Maybe 7'6 "or 7'9. You do not need as much length when not driving now, or not casting at all, as when running Kwik-fish, or bait diver or bounce back.
When these monsters hit and bury your bar you'll be glad you have more rigid action heavier. Again, wait. Once hooked they will go crazy. No nuts for water (usually not), but in the rectum, and above and below the water surface, are fishing.
Steelhead Rods
Steelhead are totally different creatures. If salmon bite much hunger, rainbow trout also strike out of irritation. Steelhead will strike at anything simply because it's there way or territory.
With this in mind you need a bar is more sensitive in that they are able to feel the bite or strike. I recommend a quick action bar. These are also 8'6 "long, but this time we want to go with a rod of £ 8-12. This kind of rod is much lighter than 12-25 pounds. If you are looking for in the G-Loomis rod, you will see to 8.17 pounds extra-fast action. It is the rod of all the bars. You will feel everything with this rod. It's hard but surprisingly sensitive. Having to also help the stiffness in game hook.
In my experience with rainbow trout, usually come to you quickly. If a bite or attack, it happens quickly. Sometimes you slam, and sometimes the line drifting or will stop, but I usually passes quickly. Bang, or "tap tap" in these cases we need a quick hook set. That's where a good cane, light fast action is an advantage. The rod-making in the coup, and gives you time to react. Again, with my cane .. IMX . There is not missing. I can overlook the whole hook, but I know that when the fish was there.
By making the hook and get a fish, oh baby, be prepared for some action. I love the body of a salmon, but in my opinion, there is no fight like a rainbow. These guys come up out of the water head, tremors, upstream, downstream, whatever.
Again, if you're in the boat you can afford to go a little less for the same scenario as the previous … stoppers, bait / diver, etc. ..
The marks can be difficult to choose, since there are few. If you do not go with the top two (Loomis Lamiglas Y), go with something reasonably priced but reliable. I reduced my search to the bar iM7 by Berkley. It's a great bar for the money, and gives a high reliability. Depending on where you are geographically more or less options, but Berkley rod can be easily found anywhere.
Finally, do not be afraid to ask questions. Just do not ask me a beer that "can do both." We all know what you get. If you tell them what kind of fishing are mostly can get you started. You may ask how much to spend at that point. After all comes down to opinions.
